AmaWaterways christens Europe’s biggest river ship AmaMagna
AmaWaterways has christened Europe’s biggest river vessel AmaMagna at a ceremony in Austria.
The ship’s godmother Samantha Brown (pictured), a US travel television host, broke a Champagne bottle against the hull in keeping with tradition.
At 22 metres wide, AmaMagna is almost twice the width of standard river ships.
Despite the bigger size, the ship can only accommodate 20% more passengers than a standard river ship, meaning there is extra space for the 196 passengers.
More than half of the 98 staterooms are suites measuring between 335 and 710 square foot.
The suites feature outside balconies, open seating areas and bathrooms with double sinks and walk-in showers.
Due to is size, it will only sail cruises on the Danube.
The naming ceremony on Thursday in Grein included speeches from Schreiner, Karst and Brown, followed by local entertainment celebrating Sound of Music and Austrian singer Johann Hölzel, better known as Falco.
Schreiner said: “With AmaMagna’s double width design allowing for more personal space, amenities and dining venues, I have had this unique ship on my mind for years and we are thrilled to officially welcome her to the AmaWaterways family.”
Karst hailed Brown as a “perfect fit” as godmother in her speech.
She said: “She is a perfect fit as godmother for this very special ship that is also challenging ideas of what river cruising can offer people in search of personalised travel experiences.”
AmaMagna embarked on its maiden voyage in May from Vilshofen, Germany, to Budapest, Hungary.
