Onyx Hospitality Group to open first Japan property

Onyx Hospitality Group is set to open its first property in Japan in 2024.

The hotel will be located in the northern town of Niseko and will be a central feature of the much-awaited Aruku-zaka Street development in central Hirafu.

Named Amari Niseko, Onyx said the property will be a year-round resort providing a base for skiing in the winter months and hiking and biking in the summer.

It will feature 126 rooms in a variety of studios and suites, as well as a “transitional” all-day restaurant which will transform into a destination cocktail bar at night.

“Originally from Thailand, Amari has been going places and introducing its unique take on contemporary Thai-ness to new markets like the Maldives, Malaysia, China and Sri Lanka in recent years,” said president and chief executive Douglas Martell.

“We are excited to be introducing our flagship brand to yet another new destination with the signing of our very first hotel in Japan. We look forward to a long-term collaboration with Metropoly Holdings as the sole hotel operator of the landmark Aruku-zaka Street development in one of the world’s most popular ski destinations.”

The Aruku-zaka Street development is being designed as a “village hub” for both visitors and the local community, with central plazas, a lively pedestrian walkway and a selection of lifestyle, retail and food and beverage offerings.

Amari Niseko and Aruku-zaka Street can both be reached via a two-hour drive or train journey from New Chitose Airport in Sapporo.
