White Desert unveils new Antarctic camp

Luxury specialist tour operator White Desert is to launch its second adventure camp in Antarctica in November.

Named Wolf’s Fang after the mountain peak that dominates the skyline, the camp will comprise six state-of-the-art, individually-heated sleeping tents designed for two guests each.

A spacious lounge tent will offer a place to relax and enjoy meals around a vintage prospector oven while an ice bar will serve cocktails made from 10,000-year-old glacial ice.

A statement from White Desert said the camp would retain its customary fusion of “luxury with a light environmental touch”, while interiors of leather and canvas will “hark back to the golden age of polar exploration”.

The camp will offer a select few adventurers the chance to experience a rare region of Antarctica.

Visible from over 100km away on clear days, Wolf’s Fang mountain was first seen by a flying expedition funded by the Nazi government in the late 1930s. Since then, the area has been closed to tourists with only Norwegian scientists and a handful of elite alpinists braving the summits.

White Desert said the camp had been designed to cater for the “more adventurous”, with activities hosted by expert guides including ice climbing, abseiling, ‘fat biking’ and hiking to the summit of nearby peaks.

“Ever since I first visited these mountains, I’ve dreamt of setting up a camp that would allow clients a chance to reconnect with nature, but also be adventurous,” said White Desert’s founder Patrick Woodhead, a polar explorer who holds three World Records and has skied over 4,000km across Antarctica.

“Wolf’s Fang camp allows guests to experience something totally unique and that’s not something easily found these days.”

White Desert’s first eco-camp, Whichaway Oasis, is designed to be less strenuous, featuring a newly installed sauna and wellness pod.

Guests at both camps can fly to the Geographic South Pole, the lowest point on Earth, and visit an Emperor Penguin colony of over 28,000 birds. Travelling from Cape Town, South Africa by private jet, experiences run throughout December 2021 and January 2022.

Prices for Wolf’s Fang start from $45,000. The first trip departs on November 28, 2021. The six-day Early Emperors package starts from $52,000 while the eight-day Emperors & South Pole package starts from $83,000.

White Desert sells through travel agents and tour operators as well as direct sales through its website.
