Mexican property Hotel Esencia joins The Set Collection

Hotel representation company The Set Collection has added prominent Mexican property Hotel Esencia to its portfolio, marking its first hotel in the Americas.

The 50-acre estate located at the midpoint between Tulum and Playa del Carmen was originally built as a private hideaway for Italian duchess Rosa de Ferrari, and later became a hotel. Its current owner, Hollywood producer and entrepreneur Kevin Wendle, purchased the property in 2014.

Hotel Esencia comprises 47 suites and four villas, including its top accommodation, the Esencia Mansion, which was unveiled last year offering four suites, three pools, a 20-seat cinema, blue-chip artwork and an underground cocktail lounge.

The hotel’s restaurants include Mistura, a ‘sea-to-table’ eatery serving specialities from the Yucatan peninsula; Beefbar, which has outposts in Paris, Mykonos and Dubai; and Taiyo, a Japanese sushi restaurant equipped with an omakase bar.

A spa offers Mayan-inspired treatments while the nearby bay of Xpu-Ha is a natural haven for wildlife, swimmers and divers. The Mayan ruins of Tulum and the pristine reefs are also within easy reach from the hotel.

The Set Collection said it was “building a portfolio of non-competing hotels whilst providing a platform that will encourage them to work together to achieve their business objectives”. The collection currently includes founding member hotels Hotel Café Royal in London, Conservatorium in Amsterdam, Lutetia in Paris and Mamilla Hotel in Jerusalem, as well as four hotels in Asia: The Opposite House in Beijing, The Upper House in Hong Kong, The Temple House in Chengdu and The Middle House in Shanghai.
