Record-breaking British explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes is one of the keynote speakers for the 12th annual Clia UK & Ireland Conference, taking place in Southampton on May 23-25.

Sir Ranulph will address delegates on the final day of the conference, courtesy of Scenic.

The explorer, who served in the British Army for eight years including a period on counter-insurgency service, was the first person to cross Antarctica on foot and in 2009 climbed Mount Everest.

Clia will announce more keynote speakers in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, technology in the cruise industry will be a sub-theme of the conference, alongside the main ‘Generation Cruise’ focus, covering subjects including ship design, new onboard initiatives, and updates on latest investments in technology by member lines.

The event will feature a trade fair on May 23, a full-day of conference and networking sessions, plus a gala dinner on May 24. The conference will close on May 25 on Princess Cruises’ Royal Princess, followed by an opportunity to look around
the ship.

Andy Harmer, senior vice-president membership and director Clia UK & Ireland, said: “Sir Ranulph is an awe-inspiring character with incredible tales to tell, and it will be a privilege to be able to hear them first-hand.

“The cruise industry is often taking the lead in the introduction of new technology to enhance the holiday experience.”

A limited number of places are still available for agent attendees. Tickets cost £132 excluding accommodation.
