Silversea Cruises has pushed back the launch of its first Nova-class ship by a month until August 14, 2023.

News of the delay for Silver Nova came as the cruise line marked the start of construction of Silver Ray, the second ship in the Nova class.

A traditional steel cutting ceremony was held at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, on Wednesday (November 23). Silver Ray is set to join Silversea’s fleet in summer 2024.

The delay to Silver Nova was blamed on “the global situation” and the vessel is now expected to make its maiden voyage on a round-trip from Fusina (Venice).

Roberto Martinoli, president and chief executive at Silversea Cruises, said: “As part of Royal Caribbean Group, Silversea has long stood at the forefront of innovation when it comes to environmentally conscious cruising.

“The launch of the Nova class represents a giant leap forward in this regard and we are introducing pioneering technologies.

“Given the worldwide issues that have affected the construction of Silver Nova, it has been decided to amend her launch date by approximately one month – in order to uphold the signature level of experience that our discerning guests have come to expect when travelling with Silversea.”

Silversea’s Nova-class ships will have hybrid technology that uses fuel cells, batteries and dual-fuel engines that use liquefied natural gas, emitting zero local emissions while in port.

The cruise line has informed affected passengers and agents about Silver Nova’s delayed launch, offering travellers a saving of 10% when booking an alternative voyage before November 30, 2022; a Future Cruise Credit, valued at 100% of the total booking amount paid; or a cash refund option.
