Private buyouts and ‘heli-hopping’ among key trends for elite travellers this year

Private buyouts, home-to-home holidays and so-called ‘ultra’ itineraries are set to be the key trends among high-net-worth travellers this year, according to a new trends report by Globetrender and Ultima Collection.

The Luxury Travel Trends Report 2021 showcases the most notable trends emerging from Ultima Collection’s of ultra-luxury hotels and private residences.

The report denoted a rise in demand for exclusive-use options, as affluent travellers opted for privacy and seclusion in the wake of the pandemic.

The mantra of ‘fly less, stay longer’ would continue into 2021, the report said, with high-end travellers opting for home-to-home holidays where they could base themselves in private residences for extended periods.

So-called ultra-itineraries would also prove popular for high-net-worth individuals this year.

An uptick in interest for 'once in a lifetime' adventures among high-net-worth individuals also suggested 2021 would be the year they embarked on a blow-the-budget holiday or ‘ultra’ itinerary.

The report also found that affluent travellers would turn to helicopters as their preferred mode of transport this year in the quest for ultimate privacy and access to the most remote locations.

Luxury brands offering hyper-personalisation would also prove popular, the report claimed, adding that high-net-worth travellers were looking for brands to take the time and care to anticipate exactly what they needed.

"It's always interesting to examine what is happening at the very highest echelons of travel, as this is often where trends begin," said Globetrender's founder Jenny Southan.

“Throughout the pandemic, high-net-worth individuals have been able to circumnavigate many of the travel restrictions the average person is faced with by chartering private aircraft and relocating to less urban outposts, whether in their own country or abroad.

"They can also more freely travel for business purposes, which allows them to cross borders when others can't.

"By partnering with Ultima Collection, Globetrender has been able to identify some of the trends that will be most significant in 2021 for this demographic, at a time when both travellers and even the travel industry itself feels powerless to plan for the future.

"These trends show what wealthy consumers of tomorrow want and how their motivations and priorities are shifting."
