New private island retreat set to open on the Great Barrier Reef

A new private island retreat is set to open on the Great Barrier Reef later this year.

Pelorus Private Island is the latest property from Northern Escape Collection, a portfolio of boutique, sustainable lodges and experiences in Queensland.

The island will feature a single residence, which will sleep a maximum of eight guests across four suites.

The property can be accessed via a 30-minute helicopter journey from Townsville or a private superyacht.

Guests can partake in a range of bespoke activities, including diving and snorkelling, guided jet ski and sea bob tours, reef fishing, boat charters and visits to the Museum of Underwater Art.

The island also provides access to Hinchinbrook Island, Australia’s largest island national park, home to rainforest hiking trails, waterfalls and rich flora and fauna.

Chris Morris, founder and executive chairman of Northern Escape Collection parent company Morris Group, said Pelorus Private Island would bring “something incredibly unique” to North Queensland.

“Pelorus Private Island is a rare offering on the Great Barrier Reef, where guests can enjoy unparalleled levels of privacy and personalised service, in a location that seamlessly combines nature with luxury,” he said.

“The intimate dwelling is best shared with family and friends looking for a truly memorable getaway on the reef together. The secluded and highly private nature of the residence will attract a calibre of premium travellers not often seen in this part of the world.”

He added: “Pelorus Private Island aligns with the growing consumer demand for ultra-luxe products that offer exclusivity, privacy and remoteness while allowing them to connect and spend time with loved ones.”

Pelorus Private Island is currently under construction and is due to open to international and domestic travellers in November 2023.

The island is bookable for minimum three-night stays, with prices starting from £10,400 per night.

Tourism and Events Queensland said the new property would complement other recent luxury developments, including The House at Lizard Island in the Cairns and Great Barrier Reef region, which opened at the end of 2022.

Other properties in the Northern Escape Collection portfolio include Orpheus Island Lodge on the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Ecolodge in the Daintree Rainforest, outback resort Mt Mulligan Lodge, and Beechmont Estate in the Scenic Rim.
