Journey Mexico achieves B Corp certification

Specialist tour operator Journey Mexico has said it is “thrilled” after achieving B Corp certification.

The certification, awarded by global non-profit network B Lab, recognises the organisations committed to the ‘benefit for all’ ethos and involves a rigorous process that scrutinises a company’s operations to measure its social and environmental impact.

Journey Mexico said the accolade reflected its commitment to business practices that create positive impact on people and the environment, adding it was “proud” to join the global community of organisations working towards a shared goal of sustainability and positive impact.

The 20-year-old company has a dedicated sustainability committee to develop policies that prioritise sustainable business ventures, measure performance and create partnerships to promote ecotourism.

Journey Mexico works with local communities and non-profit conservation and sustainable development organisations to create educational travel experiences.

Travellers can visit a high-end eco-camp in Bahia Magdalena to take part in a sea turtle research and conservation project, or board a gondola to explore the canals and floating gardens of Xochimilco – an ancient Aztec water transport system – to discover its history before enjoying a traditional lunch by local chefs.

The company also hosts volunteering projects with local communities in which visitors can learn traditional agricultural techniques and cook local dishes such as the Mayan recipe ‘mucbipollo’.

The Journey Mexico team also participated in sustainability workshops during the annual company retreat.

Looking ahead, the operator said it was committed to “on-going education, learning from mistakes, implementing improvements, and aspiring to lead in positive impact travel in Mexico”.
