Hot springs property in the US to offer ‘authentic onsen ryokan experience’
Japanese hotel group Hoshino Resorts has confirmed plans to develop a new-build property in the USA.
The hotel will be located in Sharon Springs, a village in Schoharie County about three-and-a-half hours from New York City. It is set to open in 2028.
The 40-room hotel will offer an “authentic onsen ryokan experience” combining “ryokan-style accommodations with the rejuvenating benefits of mineral springs”.
Sharon Springs is an area known for its rich mineral water resources and has a history of attracting visitors seeking their therapeutic benefits. The property, which will utilise the mineral waters on site, will be the village’s first luxury hotel.
Hoshino Resorts said the project signified a “significant step” in its global expansion, marking its first new-build project outside of Asia and an opportunity to bring its “pioneering onsen ryokan concept” to the US market.
It said the opening of the New York State property was part of its broader strategy to expand its footprint in key international markets.
Hoshino Resorts was founded in 1914 as a family-owned Japanese ryokan in Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture. Rebranded as Hoshino Resorts by current chief executive Yoshiharu Hoshino in 1995, it now includes five hospitality brands (Hoshinoya, Kai, Risonare, Omo and Beb) and a total of 60 properties across Japan, Bali and Taiwan.
