Iceland’s Blue Lagoon remains shut six days after the latest volcanic eruption.

However, the operator of the geothermal spa said the decision to extend its closure as a “precautionary measure” until today (Tuesday) will be reassessed.

It pointed to the Icelandic Meteorological Office reporting that the eruption had now ceased.

“Further updates and information will be provided as they become available,” a statement on the Blue Lagoon website said.

“We will continue to closely follow the guidelines and recommendations of the authorities, working collaboratively with them to monitor the progression of events.”

The spa site is 20 minutes from Keflavik airport on the Reykjanes peninsula in south-west Iceland, which has been struck by a series of eruptions since November.

These have affected the town of Grindavik and area to the north of it. 

The latest Foreign Office travel advice for Iceland said: “All roads to Grindavik and the surrounding area are closed and you should stay away from this area. 

“Keflavik International airport and the road to it is unaffected and operating normally. 

“The capital city, Reykjavik, and the rest of Iceland is not impacted by the eruptions.” 

However, the advice added: “The likelihood of further eruptions in this location remains high. You should monitor local media for updates and follow the authorities’ advice on travel to the area.”
