LOCATION: With its chic and minimalist Asian style, the Nam Hai is an antidote to the gaudy casino resorts popping up on the China Sea coastline. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from the charming town of Hoi An, famous for its high-quality tailors and amazing street food. First impression: The hotel’s sea of slate, marble and neutral shades, which will be familiar to anyone who visited other GHM properties, is immediately calming. Smiling staff greet us with a ginger tea and we are taken by golf buggy to our beach villa. THE FACTS: The resort is made up of sixty one-bedroom villas and forty privately-owned two to five bedroom villas, each with their own private infinity pool. The one-bed villas are arranged in a horseshoe-shape on the vast and pristine Ha My beach, where barely a human footprint dents its perfection. Villas have an unusual but gorgeous design. The bed takes centre stage on a raised platform, flanked by a sunken eggshell bathtub and cream-cushioned lounging area perfect for gazing out to the sea. The bathroom, with its ‘his and hers’ dressing areas, leads out to a private courtyard with outdoor shower. If the beach isn’t your thing, the resort has three tree-lined infinity pools, each a different temperature. Most of the well-heeled couples and families opt for the largest pool, leaving the other two deliciously quiet for us. Eating is taken seriously here, with two excellent restaurants. The poolside Beach restaurant serves up Vietnamese classics as well as pizzas and salads, perfect for lunch. But the main Indian restaurant is most impressive, with its huge open kitchen, moody lighting, and stunning Asian design. The food measured up too – it might seem odd to eat an Indian meal in Vietnam but you won’t have any regrets. WOW: This magical spa has eight treatment pavilions centred around a picturesque lily pond, each with its own private deck and deep-soak bath. The pavilions feel incredibly private and the spa therapists make sure feel like you’re the only guest at the hotel. A GOOD BASE FOR: The Nam Hai operates a shuttle to Hoi An, where clients can explore the quaint rows of shops selling clothes, handbags and local crafts. The hotel can also arrange a Vietnamese cooking class or a trip to the Marble Mountains, home to villages where families chisel stone statues, artwork and jewellery.
