The hotel is near the village of Knutsford and less than 20 miles away from the centre of Manchester.First impression: The hotel’s entrance is through the red brick archway of the former gatehouse and down a narrow road through the golf course. The lobby, which is home to the Brown Restaurant, has a rather corporate feel but reception staff provide a warm welcome.

THE FACTS:  The hotel opened its doors last year after a £15 million development, including a stand-out swimming pool and spa.Our double room was stylishly designed in shades of plum and grey with cute touches such as a fluffy meerkat on each pillow and Aromatherapy Associates toiletries. The historic manor house, built in 1870, is home to the elegant Browns, Mere's flagship restaurant, and the more casual Club House overlooking the championship golf course.

WOW: The spa is without doubt the hotel’s star attraction, complete with hydrotherapy pool with sunken loungers and a thermal zone with steam room. The pristine championship golf course is one of the best in the area.
