Review: The Chedi Muscat

Tranquillity is guaranteed at this expansive resort set on 21 acres of land

Location: The resort is set on an expansive 21 acres of land, plus its own stretch of private beach overlooking the Gulf of Oman. It’s a 20-minute drive from Muscat International airport and 10 minutes from Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.

First impressions: Drawing inspiration from the ancient Bedouin tradition of taking shade under a tree to rest and recoup, the peaceful tented lobby boasts a relaxed atmosphere as staff in traditional Omani robes greet you with a smile and tea.

Everywhere you look is a work of art. Golden sunlight streams through the long, swaying grass and reflects off symmetrical whitewashed buildings. You immediately feel a sense of calm.

My Club Suite was beautiful – an elegant fusion of Asian influences and Omani detailing, complete with a spacious living area, large bedroom and luxurious sunken bath.

My private terrace overlooked one of the water ponds, with just the breeze, palm trees and birds for company.

The facts: Nestled in the heart of Oman’s bustling capital, The Chedi Muscat seamlessly blends elegance and comfort for a bespoke and unforgettable stay.

The vision of acclaimed hotel architect Jean-Michel Gathy, the resort’s 162 rooms and suites offer magnificent views of beautifully landscaped gardens, the Hajar Mountains and the picturesque Gulf of Oman.

The hotel has six room types. Resort facilities include a health centre and spa as well as several swimming pools, including the aptly named Long Pool, which at 103 metres is the length of a football pitch.

There are also six restaurants serving food from around the world, including The Beach Restaurant, renowned throughout Oman for the quality of its seafood. Expect epic Arabian flavours and plenty of European favourites too.

Explore: The hotel is the perfect base for visiting hotspots including Grand Sultan Qaboos Mosque and Mutrah Souq, with its ancient maze of intricate pathways.

The National Museum of Oman celebrates the country’s heritage in a beautiful modern space, while the Al Alam Palace and 16th-century forts Al Jalali and Al Marani are just a short drive away.

If white sands and turquoise waters are more your client’s style, the Daminyat Islands can be reached in 45 minutes for a day of snorkelling with turtles and barbecues on the beach.

Ideal for: Relaxation, recuperation and exploring all Oman has to offer.

Wow: I loved being surrounded by the sound of waves being carried on the wind. The spa, which sits above the Long Pool and has views of the Gulf of Oman, is a sanctuary.

My ancient Balinese massage was one of the best treatments I have ever had. Walking back into your candlelit bedroom every evening was also a beautiful touch and a fitting prelude to a perfect night’s sleep.

Book it: Rates for a Serai Room start at £355 a night on B&B basis. Club Suites start from £1,075 and come with club benefits. ghmhotels.com/en/muscat
