Review: Silversands Beach House

Grenada’s newest opening overlooks secluded Portici Beach

Location: After a 10-hour flight from London (there are three flights a week from Gatwick and two from Heathrow), I sigh with relief when I realise Silversands Beach House is just a five-minute drive from the airport.

Tucked on the southwest coast of the island, the cliffside property overlooks secluded Portici Beach. Sister property Silversands Grand Anse, which guests have full access to, is about 20 minutes away, with a complimentary shuttle service available day and night.

First impressions: The soothing sounds of waves breaking on the shore, powder-white sand I’m itching to sink my toes into and beaming staff eager to greet us – these all await as we cruise down the driveway to reception.

It’s only fitting that we’re welcomed with a fruity, spiced rum cocktail. Once checked in, we’re whisked to our rooms in golf carts, which are on call for guests whenever they need to save their legs from the steep slopes that wind through the resort.

As I enter my room, the sun is sinking below the horizon, setting the tone for a relaxing few days ahead. The decor is very minimalist: natural wood, ivory furnishings and an abundance of sunlight, further adding to the tranquil atmosphere that envelops the resort.

The facts: The hotel opened in February, becoming the second property in Silversands’ portfolio. With just 28 rooms and suites – all with a private, canopied terrace – the hotel is intimate and staff are attentive without being intrusive. Guests can opt for an Island or Ocean View Room, Beachfront Junior Suite or Two-Bedroom Ocean View Suite.

The only restaurant is Italian-inspired Azzurro, located on the beachfront so guests can order snacks and cocktails while lounging on sunbeds before an evening aperitif and dinner. The menu features handmade pasta and freshly caught mahi-mahi and red snapper.

Guests can also dine at the restaurants at Silversands Grand Anse – including Asian-influenced Asiatique, beach club-style Grenadian Grill, and cigar and rum bar Puro – and use the property’s spa, which features an indoor pool, sauna, ice cave, four treatment rooms and a gym.

Ideal for: Clients seeking a peaceful, leisurely getaway. With its quiet and relaxed atmosphere, this hotel will appeal to couples looking for a romantic retreat. For those who want a livelier setting, Silversands Grand Anse is close enough to visit for dinner or a day by the pool before retreating to the tranquillity of Beach House.

Explore: During my stay, I barely spot another soul, except for guests lounging by the pool. However, that isn’t to say that Grenada isn’t full of life. While clients will be tempted to bask in the sun or spend the day paddleboarding, the island’s scenery is not to be missed.

Known as the Spice Isle of the Caribbean, Grenada may only be 133 square miles, but it is bursting with heritage and culture, as well as breathtaking rainforest and coastal landscapes. Silversands offers bookable experiences with private tour guides, including hiking Grenada’s idyllic waterfalls, an off-road dune buggy adventure or wandering through the nutmeg and cocoa tree estates.

Make sure to recommend clients take advantage of Silversands’ private boat, Blade. They can take a scenic sunset cruise or snorkel among the statues of the underwater sculpture park, before docking for lunch and a glass of rosé at Flamingo Bay. Guests can easily explore multiple sights within a day or even a few hours with a guide.

Wow: The genuine warmth of hospitality is what really sets this property – and the island itself – apart. The staff are so welcoming and can’t do enough for us.

From keeping us refreshed with cool towels and delicious strawberry smoothies as we lounge on the beach, to booking guests into limited-seating local restaurants for an authentic Grenadian dinner, these small yet meaningful gestures elevate the experience.

Book it: Rates start from $700 per night (exclusive of local taxes and service charge) for an Island View Room. Silversandscollection.com
