Location: Nestled among the prized blue domes of Oia, Katikies Santorini holds prime position on the northwestern tip of the island. Travellers flock from far and wide to this spot to snap the best views of sunset, but for those staying at Katikies Santorini, the phenomenon is on your doorstep
First impressions: Entering the hotel from a set of steep steps just off the winding, boutique-lined lanes of Oia, Katikies Santorini cascades down the cliffside and capitalises on its greatest asset: the caldera. Views take in vast swathes of glittering, blue sea dotted with speck-like ships; dramatic volcanic rock formations tinged red, white and black; and the adorable, white-washed town of Oia tumbling down the rock face. As if not to distract from the view, the hotel itself is distinctly muted, sporting natural hues of white, grey and cream; soft, curved edges; and minimalistic furniture.
The facts: The adult-only Katikies Santorini opened in 1987 and is the hotel group’s flagship resort. The property’s 34 rooms and suites come in seven room categories, and have been carved into the cliff to ensure sea-facing views. My superior double was large and luxurious, with an expansive living area; a cloud-like, king-size bed; and a sizeable bathroom featuring a free-standing tub and separate shower wet-room. The three infinity pools are set on different levels, with one providing a stunning backdrop for breakfast. The property features two restaurants – champagne and sushi bar Seltz and fine-dining venue Mikrasia. The latter is home to just six tables and serves up modern European fare. A boutique and a spa with one couples’ treatment room are also on offer.
Wow: Whether you’re stepping out on to your private terrace or floating serenely in an infinity pool, the breathtaking view of the caldera will hog your attention for your entire stay. Watch the sky turn from bright blue in the morning to dusty pink at sunset, before finally transforming inky black against the twinkling lights of Oia at night. Bliss.
Book it: A night’s B&B starts at €470 in a double room. Katikies.com
