Review: Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel

Location: While most Ibizan properties pride themselves on their coastal locations, this hotel is proud to be inland among farmland, rolling fields and perfumed orange groves. Located in the northeast of the White Isle, between San Lorenzo and Santa Eulària, Atzaró is a 30-minute drive from the airport and 20 minutes from Ibiza Town. The hotel’s beach club is only a 10-minute drive away in Cala Nova.

First impressions: My expectations were very high, given Atzaró’s reputation as an Ibizan institution. For years the hotel has been a popular haunt among celebrities keen to escape the razzmatazz of the less-secluded big brand names.

This authentic 300-year-old finca-turned-hotel is rustic, rural and simply divine. From the moment I arrived, the laid-back atmosphere took over and I felt at home. The aesthetics are beautiful, with white-washed walls decorated by fuchsia and bougainvillea and plenty of nods to the hotel’s past as a working orange farm and family home.

The facts: This family-owned hotel sits within 13 hectares. With 24 suites – of which five have private pools – the hotel is incredibly intimate and the service is personalised, but not intrusive. The main grounds are home to 10 of the rooms, while the remaining 14 are located across the road.

There are four main pools, but the showstopper is the 43-metre-long pool with a huge ‘Love’ sign at one end. The food is a highlight, embracing the farm-to-fork concept thanks to an extensive vegetable garden.

Le Veranda serves a hearty breakfast, lunch and dinner and The Orange Tree (open July to September), in a fairy-light adorned courtyard, attracts crowds from across the island every night. Guests are encouraged to explore the three-hectare organic vegetable garden. Filled with olive, cypress and fig trees, it boasts pergolas strewn with climbing plants and tumbling veg. There’s also fountains and romantic seating areas dotted throughout the veggie patches. The hotel regularly hosts picnics and open-air cinema nights among the growing goodies.

Ideal for: VIPs wanting a peaceful trip to Ibiza, where they’ll be left to their own devices and enjoy a relaxed, mindful getaway.

Explore: Ensure clients pay a visit to Atzaró’s trendy beach club in lesser-known Cala Nova. Guests can book a daybed and enjoy the epic food. The hotel-owned Aubergine restaurant has the same farm-to-fork concept and is a must-visit for anyone holidaying in Ibiza, regardless of where they’re staying.

Other recommended restaurants include La Palomba in Sant Llorenç de Balàfia and the Giri Cafe in Sant Joan de Labritja. Clients will no doubt want to explore some of the island’s beach hotspots; recommend Cala Conte for its crystal-clear waters and epic sunsets; Cala Bassa for its string of beach clubs; and Cala Saladeta, which can only be reached after a short hike. Cala Benirrás in the north of the island is also worth a visit, particularly on a Sunday when locals gather to drum and sing as the sun sets.

Wow: Atzaró has made a name for itself on the wellness front. Many guests come here for detox retreats, but even a visit to the outdoor sauna pod, the Finnish sauna and steam room or the Jacuzzi deck will leave you revitalised. My massage was out-of-this-world good.

Book it: Prices start from €245 per night in low season.
