Scenic Group cancels remaining 2021 European sailings

Scenic Group has cancelled this season’s remaining European river cruises due to increased lockdown measures across the continent.

Six Scenic sailings and four Emerald Cruises departures have been scrapped and affected passengers are being contacted by the sister river lines.

All the departures were due to visit Europe’s Christmas markets.

The river cruise firm had said last week that it was monitoring the situation in Europe “closely” after the German city of Munich cancelled its Christmas market.

Austria entered full national lockdown on Monday as it battled a new surge of Covid-19 cases.

Affected passengers are being given the option to transfer to a 2022 Christmas Markets river cruise.

Global director of brand and marketing David Winterton said bringing the season to “an abrupt end” had “saddened” the company.

He added: “For the last few months, we have welcomed thousands of guests on board our river ships, providing them with fantastic memories of sailing through the heart of Europe’s villages, towns and cities.

“We now look forward to new adventures with our guests once we commence the 2022 European river cruise season in March.”
