Puglia gains new luxury hotel

A 17th-century farmhouse turned boutique hotel has opened in Puglia in southern Italy.

Masseria Calderisi soft-opened in late spring but has officially opened in time for Italy’s easing of travel restrictions.

The property is set among eight hectares of rural olive groves, two kilometres from the Adriatic Coast and a 30 minute drive from the historic towns of Monopoli, Fasano and Ostuni.

It features 24 rooms and suites set around a central piazza, including a tower suite dating back to 1658 with direct access to a private rooftop terrace.

Set away from the rest of the property is the Il Fortino suite, which lies next to a private walled garden and private swimming pool.

In-house restaurant La Corte serves contemporary Puglian cuisine., featuring organic ingredients grown on site, mozzarella and regional Podolica beef from nearby farms and seafood caught by local fishermen.

The property also features an 18-metre pool, a pool bar and restaurant, an apero terrace, a boutique, a gym with Technogym equipment and a spa with two treatment rooms. A 10-minute shuttle service connects guests to the hotel’s exclusive sandy beach club, Calderisi Beach, equipped with sun loungers, a live DJ, gazebos and a restaurant serving pizza, pasta and seafood dishes.

The hotel’s design combines local materials with “international touches”, such as luxury fabrics from France and Moroccan fixtures, to offer a contemporary take on Puglian masserias.

Original details from the 1658 farmhouse, stables and old chapel - constructed from tufa stone quarried on site - have been kept, including high vaulted ceilings and a subterranean olive mill.

The hotel has bicycles for guests to explore neighbouring villages. It can also arrange guided gastronomic cycle tours, pizza-cooking lessons, yoga classes and private cruises.

A small collection of rescue donkeys also live on the grounds of the property, some of which are Martina Franca donkeys, a large breed originally from Puglia.

Masseria Calderisi is available to rent exclusively for weddings and parties of any size. A 10x15 metre Moroccan tent is permanently pitched in the olive groves surrounding the property to be used to private events.

Double rooms start from €380 per night, including breakfast,
