Luxury rail journeys to star in Channel 5 programme

Luxury Australian train operator Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions is to feature in a new six-part series on Channel 5 called The World’s Most Scenic Railway Journeys.

The first episode will focus on the operator’s Indian Pacific train on its Sydney to Adelaide leg, covering the Clare Valley wine region and Lake Bumbunga in South Australia as well as the harbour city of Sydney and the vineyard region of Adelaide.

The full Indian Pacific route continues onto Perth through mountain ranges, deserts, subtropical savannahs and wineries, including a selection of off-train experiences.

The Sydney to Perth crossing, which spans 4352km, can be done in one hit over four days and three nights, or clients can break the journey in Adelaide and book side trips to Kangaroo Island or the Flinders Ranges in the South Australian outback.

Other episodes in the series, narrated by British actor Bill Nighy, will cover the Northern Belle along the Welsh Borders; Alaska Railroad's Denali Star between the cities of Anchorage and Fairbanks; Sweden on the Inlandsbanan; Scotland from Inverness to Wick on the Far North Line; and the Tornado steam train from York to Edinburgh through Durham, Newcastle and the Northumbrian coast.

The first episode airs at 8pm on September 30.

Prices on the Indian Pacific start from $1,819 per person.
