IHG finds 57% of Brits are ready to rebook missed travel

A large majority of holiday-starved Brits are ready to rebook missed travel from 2020, according to a new report from IHG Hotels and Resorts.

Some 57% of the 2,000 UK respondents surveyed by the hotel group said they were planning to rebook cancelled trips or have already rebooked, with family holidays and visiting loved ones topping travel wish lists for 2021.

Four in 10 Brits confirmed that 2020 was the longest they had ever gone without a trip, with 58% admitting they had cancelled three or more breaks last year.

The research found that prior to the pandemic, the average adult would have a holiday or mini break every four months, with almost half (47%) saying it was important to have something to look forward to.

A large proportion of those surveyed agreed that the lack of holidays had taken a toll on their overall mood and wellbeing, with almost half (49%) saying holidays positively impacted their physical and mental health.

Some 38% of respondents agreed that going away on holiday was not only important for themselves, but for their relationships with friends, family and partners as well, while 40% claimed that spending quality time with others has the greatest positive impact on their mood and wellbeing when on holiday.

However, safety remained a key sticking point for the majority of travellers, with 43% saying they plan to hold off on travelling until the vaccine is more readily available.

“With so many looking forward to rebooking missed experiences, whether it’s travelling to spend time with family, a trip away with friends, or travelling for work – it’s evident that there’s a hunger for human connection again,” said Karin Sheppard, managing director for Europe at IHG Hotels and Resorts.

“We know travel may still look a little different this year, but we are committed to continue innovating and finding new ways to help people connect and experience our own backyard and beyond. So, when the world is ready to travel again, they can feel confident doing so with us.”
