Bequia Beach Hotel supports volcano relief effort in Saint Vincent

Bequia Beach Hotel is supporting the national relief effort in Saint Vincent following the eruption of the La Soufrière volcano.

The volcano, which is located on the largest island in the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines chain, erupted for the first time in 10 years on April 9 and again on April 13.

No deaths have been reported so far but approximately one third of the mainland in the north is off limits and airspace remains closed.

Thousands have been evacuated from their homes to the south side of the island and power and water supply is intermittent in some communities.

Bequia Beach Hotel, which is located five miles from the mainland, reported mild cosmetic damage as a result of the ash but confirmed all staff were safe.

The property is currently undergoing a clean-up operation and is working with global empowerment mission Bstrong to assist with housing and care.

Displaced residents are temporarily being housed at Bequia’s sister property, Grenadine House, while the hotel’s yacht, Star of the Sea, is being used to ship urgent supplies such as cots, non-perishable foods, water, baby essentials and masks to those in need.

“Our thoughts are with the people of Saint Vincent following the devastating volcano eruption,” said Philip Mortstedt, director of business development at Bequia Beach Hotel.

“We are doing everything we can to support those who have been affected on the mainland and will be helping with the recovery efforts. It has been an eventful year; however, we remain positive and look forward to welcoming visitors back to the island very soon.”
