Aurora Expeditions appoints new chief executive

Aurora Expeditions has appointed a new chief executive who will take up the role from June 1.

Michael Heath, who has previously held top management positions at active outdoor brands including O’Neill, Hurley and Nike, joins the expedition cruise line from Surf Hardware International.

He will replace Monique Ponfoort, who left the business seeking a “new challenge” earlier this year.

Heath said: “It is a privilege to take on the role at such an important time in the business’ history and lead Aurora into the future.

“I’m looking forward to joining the Aurora family, building on Aurora Expeditions’ pioneering heritage, actively pursuing growth with purpose and capturing the expanding opportunities ahead.”

Heath (pictured) has just returned from his first trip with Aurora to Antarctica.

“I have experienced first-hand the Aurora Expeditions difference and was incredibly impressed. Not just by the awe of Antarctica, but by Aurora’s outstanding expedition experience and highly talented expedition team,” he added.

The line’s second ship Sylvia Earle is due to launch in Antarctica in November this year.

The line said: “Heath joins at a time when the business is well-positioned for continued growth, with a deep commitment to sustainable travel and the imminent debut of its second ship.”
