Review: Pendry Manhattan West

Aspire test-drives the new kid on the block in New York’s Manhattan

Location: The buzz of New York’s Manhattan district is “moving west”, as Pendry Hotels’ co-founder Michael Fuerstman says.

New skyscrapers are still being built at Hudson Yards, which is fast becoming the next big tourist hot spot in the city with the opening of viewing platform The Edge and, for the adrenaline-seekers, City Climb – where you can dangle over the edge at 1,260ft.

Pendry Manhattan West is one of many new buildings popping up around town.

First Impressions: The hotel is far from the tallest building in the area, but has an eye-catching curved exterior that makes it stand out within the world’s most-famous skyline.

You can gaze across New York from the rooftop or laid-back Vista Lounge on the fourth floor, where breakfast is served.

Fuerstman says being involved from the very beginning of the Hudson Yards project has allowed Pendry to put its own stamp on the building, bringing a Californian influence, from where the brand has its roots.

The vibe is modern and understated luxury; minimalist, functional and chic. Floor-to-ceiling windows in all rooms give impressive views, and the lobby music and scents give a sense of relaxation. Staff are attentive when required, but hands-off.

Facts: With 164 rooms, 30 of which are suites, the Pendry Manhattan West is a large, but not intimidating hotel.

Rooms and suites are available for those with additional needs. The 24-hour gym has Peloton bikes for fitness fanatics.

Eastern Mediterranean restaurant Zou Zou’s opened in January and creates a lively atmosphere with its open kitchen style. And the speakeasy-style ‘cocktail emporium’, Bar Pendry, offers a stylish and sophisticated atmosphere in which to lounge.

Explore: The Pendry is in the heart of Manhattan. With Hudson Yards on your doorstep, access to the High Line walkway is close by.

And you don’t have to travel many blocks east before you hit Madison Square Garden and the Empire State Building (home to a recently-revamped 102nd floor observation deck) while Times Square and Broadway are walkable.

Recommend clients visit the manmade 2.4-acre island on stilts, Little Island at Pier 55, accessible after a stroll down the High Line.

Wow: The 1,265sq-ft Pendry Suite is located on the 21st floor and has impressive views across the city’s skyline.

There is a living room with a grand piano, a fireplace and a dining room for eight. The suite has two marble bathrooms, one with separate bath and shower. It also has a walk-in closet with a dressing area.

Book it: Nightly room rates excluding tax start at $625, suites lead in at $1,250 and the Pendry Suite costs $10,000. Pendry.com/Manhattan-west
