Ottley’s Plantation, St Kitts

LOCATION: St Kitts is pretty small, even by Caribbean standards, at 65 square miles, so however you arrive on the island, it’s not far away. Aspire arrived by cruise ship and arrived no more than 25 minutes later by taxi.

The airport is about six miles away from Ottley’s which sits at the bottom of Mount Liamuiga.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: When your driver is forced to enter first gear on the traffic-less way to your destination hotel it’s normally a good sign.First gear means a steep climb. A steep climb means you are high up. And high up means good views.

The view is indeed excellent although weirdly it takes a little while to notice. The skill and care with which this 18th century sugar plantation and 19th century house have been restored keep the eyes firmly on the foreground leaving the horizon waiting in line for attention.

Every colour of the green rainbow rushes to feast the retina thanks to an exquisite rolling lawn and surrounding rainforest.
It’s the kind of lawn that demands a barefoot stroll.

The Great House and satellite cottages, continue the colonial feel both inside and out, and are testament to amount of love poured into this labour.

THE FACTS: The restaurant, which serves food as good as anywhere in the Caribbean, enjoys the best views of the ocean. Even if your client doesn’t stay at the hotel it’s worth sending them there for lunch.

There are also two bars, a pool, a Jacuzzi, a spa, a tennis court and a croquet lawn.
Babysitters are available as are shuttles to the beach and room service.

There are rooms in the main house or stunning little cottages with plunge pools.

WHO’S IT FOR: The pace is slow and the experience is not opulent by any means.
So if your clients are interested in private butlers, white gloves, gold taps and constant attention this is not the place to send them

On the other hand, if like simple, tasteful and careful luxury then send them here immediately, with or without children.

A GOOD BASE FOR: The whole of the island is in easy reach but no visit to St Kitts is complete without popping across to Nevis for a day or two.

WOW: In a world of spas so complicated and weird that at times it would seem the treatments have been thought up by lunatics the simple luxury lover will breathe a sigh of relief on sight of the Mango Orchard spa.
Little more than four walls and a roof (actually a replica wood-framed Antillean cottage called a chattel house) encased in tropical rainforest manned by skilled hands.

HOW MUCH: From £1,595 for seven nights including return flights and private transfers.
