Aurora Expeditions is set to host a Antarctic Climate Expedition with a conference for invited delegates in 2023.

The Australian expedition line plans to invite around 100 guests to the event, which will be led by marine biologist Dr Sylvia Earle, godmother of the line’s new vessel (pictured) that has been named after her.

The 12-day Antarctic Climate Expedition starts on February 13, 2023, with two nights and a full day conference in Ushuaia, Argentina.

Following the conference, guests will sail on a nine-day voyage on Sylvia Earle and the trip will end with a night in Punta Arenas, Chile.

The expedition will “confront the consequences of environmental change and develop creative strategies to radically reduce carbon emissions”.

Guests will come up with resolutions to “inspire transformative changes for global net-zero emissions by 2050”, said the line, which announced that it was certified ‘carbon neutral’ this week.

Dr Earle said: “This will be a climate expedition like no other that can have a real impact on the future of our relationship with life on Earth.”

A series of lectures, a feature-length documentary, exhibitions and a book will be produced from the event.

Aurora’s chief executive Monique Ponfoort said: “The stories and images from this game-changing expedition aim to encourage the way people see and understand the Antarctic.

“This is a unique opportunity to discover the beauty and majesty of Antarctica, the last pristine wilderness of penguins, seals, seabirds, glaciers and icebergs, in the company of Dr Earle and her special guests.”
